A Time for Reflection: Examining Our Hearts in the Light of Christ

Lent is a sacred season that invites us to pause, reflect, and realign our lives with God’s purpose. It is a time to examine our hearts — not to dwell in guilt, but to step into the light of Christ’s grace and truth.

In Psalm 139:23-24, David prays:

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

David’s prayer is one of courage — an invitation for God to reveal the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors hindering his spiritual growth. This same invitation is at the heart of Lent.

The Power of Honest Reflection

Examining our hearts requires honesty—not just about our actions but also about our motives, priorities, and the places where we struggle to trust God fully.

  • Are there areas in my life where pride is taking root?

  • Am I harboring bitterness or resentment that’s keeping me from peace?

  • Have I been placing my will above God’s?

These questions are not meant to condemn us but to awaken us — to help us see where God’s grace is needed most.

Reflection leads to renewal. When we invite God to examine our hearts, we allow His love to heal what’s broken, His truth to correct what’s misguided, and His Spirit to strengthen what feels weak.

Living in the Light of Christ

True reflection isn’t just about identifying what’s wrong — it’s about stepping into what’s right. Jesus’ light doesn’t just expose our struggles; it reveals the path to freedom and wholeness.

As we examine our hearts this Lent, let us also:

  • Embrace God’s forgiveness. No sin is too great for His mercy.

  • Seek restoration. Healing often begins with acknowledging where we’ve fallen short and taking steps to make amends.

  • Commit to growth. Each day presents an opportunity to align our thoughts, words, and actions with the love of Christ.

  •

Proving That God Can Believe in Us

When we commit to self-examination, we show God that we take our spiritual walk seriously. Each time we allow Him to confront our pride, soften our hearts, or shift our priorities, we prove to Him that He can trust us to live in His light.

This Lent, let your reflection lead to transformation. Let your honesty with God testify to your faith in His power to renew and restore.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What areas of my heart have I avoided confronting, and how might God invite me to surrender them?

  2. What thoughts, habits, or attitudes prevent me from fully embracing God’s peace?

  3. How can I create space to listen for God’s voice more intentionally during Lent?

  4. What steps can I take today to reflect Christ’s light more clearly in my words, actions, and relationships?

May this season of reflection draw you closer to God, revealing His love in new and powerful ways. As you invite Christ’s light to search your heart, trust that His grace will meet, guide, and strengthen you for the journey ahead.
